This policy brief presents a synthesis of the main recommendations made by the UN Secretary-General in his report, Data for Development. It addresses the relationship between data and human rights. It refers to the importance of countries adopting institutional, regulatory, and governance frameworks that both stimulate the benefits of data and prevent the risks associated with its production and use.

This report explores the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on democracy in Africa, pointing to both challenges and opportunities. Through a comparative analysis of political and legal structures, interests and institutions, the report identifies potential intervention sites and existing legal guidelines that could be utilised to manage the rollout of AI in Africa.

This report discusses a range of issues around the sharing of tech intermediaries’ data, including issues of privacy and transparency and the tensions between the two, as well as a discussion on the challenges around capacity on the continent.

La publicación analiza las especificidades del ecosistema de desinformación en las últimas elecciones presidenciales de Brasil, buscando ofrecer recomendaciones para otros países de la región que enfrenten esta problemática. El estudio fue realizado por la investigadora y docente brasileña, Anna Bentes, en el marco de una pasantía en Derechos Digitales entre noviembre de 2022 y mayo de 2023.

This report maps the various AI Assistive Technologies that improve accessibility for persons with disabilities in Africa and analyses the challenges impeding the development and adoption of these ATs in Africa, including the lack of representative datasets to train AI models, proper policy safeguards, digital skills gaps, and lack of funding for AT projects. 

This policy paper responds to global and localised calls for a new social compact. It acknowledges the central role of digital inclusion and equity in mitigating the health and economic risks associated with the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns to limit the spread of the virus. 

The primary goal of this study was to gather insights to benefit stakeholders within the data ecosystem and enhance the collection and utilization of gender data, and commitments to gender data, by governments. The aim was to engage key actors in identifying opportunities to improve the enabling environment for the collection, use, and dissemination of gender data initiatives, as well as foster collaborative efforts to address the specific needs and challenges at hand.

This final report covers all three years of activities of Phase 3 of the Open Data for Development (OD4D) program from April 2020 to March 2023. The activities of Phase 3 have been funded by Global Affairs Canada, the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). This report summarizes the achievements, lessons learned, key challenges, and mitigation strategies throughout Phase 3.

Les activités de la phase III ont été financées par Affaires mondiales Canada, la Fondation William et Flora Hewlett et le Centre de recherches pour le développement international (CRDI). Ce rapport résume les réalisations, les enseignements tirés, les principaux défis et les stratégies d’atténuation tout au long de la phase III.
